March 18, 2005 - Pedestrian safety

Aloha.

Time and time again, Hawaii’s people are saddened to hear that a pedestrian has been killed or severely injured while crossing a street.

These tragedies touch us all.

What makes these accidents even more troubling is the fact that many times they could have been avoided.

Therefore, we ask pedestrians to follow this simple guideline: always cross the street in a marked crosswalk; for drivers, please be on the alert for pedestrians, especially our kupuna and keiki…

And always drive with aloha.

To strengthen our laws, my Administration has introduced a series of much-needed traffic safety measures.  One important proposal would require motorists to stop for pedestrians when they enter crosswalks.  The police chief and transportation director support this proposal.

Call your state legislator today and ask them to pass this common sense bill so you and your family will be safer when crossing the street.

Together, we can save lives.

This is Governor Linda Lingle.
