Aloha!

This past week, the state department of transportation and all four county police departments kicked off the “Click it or Ticket” seat belt enforcement campaign.

Since this campaign started five years ago, Hawai`i seat belt usage jumped from 80 percent to 95 percent, the second highest seatbelt usage in the nation (behind Arizona).

But we can all do more to ensure our streets and highways remain safe.

As we observe the long Memorial Day weekend and kick off graduation season and the start of summer, please remember to follow these simple guidelines while on the road:

Make sure children under four years old ride in a child safety seat.

Always obey the speed limit, and drive with extra caution in school zones.

Be alert for pedestrians, especially keiki and kupuna.

And for pedestrians, always cross the street in a marked crosswalk.

And always drive with aloha.

We can all do our part to save lives.

Mahalo.  This is Governor Linda Lingle.
