October 28- Truth in Budgeting

Thanks to the vibrant economy and our Administration’s prudent financial management, the state is projecting a $650 million budget surplus by the end of this fiscal year.
While many in the Legislature want to spend the entire surplus on new programs and projects, Lt. Governor Aiona and I want to take a more prudent approach.
First, we want to help those most in need by providing meaningful tax relief for Hawai`i’s lowest wage earners.
And we want to fix schools, harbors and public buildings that have fallen into disrepair. I am also looking forward to funding additional University of Hawai`i projects.
The surplus didn’t just happen. We’ve worked hard to control spending and implement policies that have led to a renewed faith in our economy and increased investment.
Our healthy budget surplus needs to be spent wisely. I will work with the Legislature to find the right balance between tax relief, infrastructure repair, and selected new programs, while planning for the future.
Mahalo. This is Governor Linda Lingle.
