This week, world oil prices soared to record highs of more than $70 per barrel.

With the highest oil dependency of any state in the nation, rising oil prices leave Hawai`i vulnerable to broad swings in electricity prices and energy supply.

Nearly 77 percent of the electricity generated in Hawai`i comes from imported oil.

To increase our energy self-sufficiency, my Administration is working collaboratively with the Legislature to pass bold, comprehensive initiatives to reduce our dependence on oil.

We are proposing initiatives to encourage the development of renewable energy sources and increase energy efficiency in state buildings.  We also want to expand tax incentives to those who install energy efficient appliances, and wind and solar systems.

With just a few days remaining in the legislative session, we need strong leadership and bipartisan cooperation to pass these comprehensive measures to ensure our energy security and economic future.

Mahalo,

This is Governor Linda Lingle
