This week, we entered into an historic agreement with Hawaiian Electric Companies that will move Hawai`i forward towards energy independence and will allow consumers to gain control of their energy costs.

The agreement highlights my Administration's commitment to integrate 1,100 megawatts of renewable energy – enough to power one third of O`ahu's electricity – into the Hawaiian Electric companies' grids.  It will lead to the construction of an undersea cable to allow renewable wind power from Maui County to be transmitted to O`ahu. It also sets out the requirement for 40 percent of electric power to come from renewable sources by 2030, doubling the amount now required by law.

This transformational agreement will make us a world leader and a model for energy independence. It will create a secure, sustainable and clean energy future and a sustainable economic future for Hawai`i.
