Celebrating the Service of the U.S. Coast Guard

Governor Lingle paid tribute to the men and women of the United States Coast Guard at the annual Coast Guard District 14 Ball and thanked members for protecting the public, environment, and United States' economic and security interests.

Celebrating the Service of the U.S. Coast Guard

Governor Lingle and military leaders celebrate with Coast Guard District 14 members.

"It is an honor to celebrate the Coast Guard's 218th birthday," said Governor Lingle. "Members of the Coast Guard are true friends and partners in the protection of the State of Hawai`i, its people, marine and coastal resources."

Governor Lingle thanked Coast Guard District 14 members for their service, and noted that as an island state surrounded by ocean – and 2,300 miles from mainland – Hawai`i is a prime beneficiary of the Coast Guard's service day in, day out.

Citing Coast Guard District 14 Commander Admiral Manson Brown's recent signing of a bilateral shiprider agreement in Samoa, Governor Lingle also acknowledged the important international role of the Coast Guard.

The agreement, signed with Cook Islands, will help curb illegal fishing.

Last year, Coast Guard District 14 responded to 300 search-and-rescue incidents and saved 110 lives.
