GOVERNOR VETOES TAX MEASURES THAT WILL STALL RECOVERY

As residents and businesses across the state are facing challenges as the result of today's global economic environment, Governor Lingle vetoed three bills that would raise taxes on residents, visitors and businesses, cause further job losses, and delay our economic recovery. "[Legislators] can't tax their way to prosperity. They can't tax their way out of this economic crisis," said Governor Lingle.

"Actions taken by our State Legislature this session to raise taxes, as well as its failure to take action on important initiatives, will delay our economic recovery. By focusing only on special interests and not on the broader public interests, their decisions are going to make life harder for the people of Hawai`i."
