Governor Calls for
Revamping Public Education

In order to provide more direct accountability for the public, Governor Lingle announced she will propose a restructuring of the Department of Education during the next legislative session. "The current governance structure for education in our state is not an effective one," the Governor said. "I think the best approach we can take is to create education in our state as a cabinet department under the Governor."

October is "American
Pharmacists Month" 

In recognition of the important contributions of pharmacists in promoting the health and well-being of Hawai`i residents, as well as preventing illness, Governor Lingle issued a proclamation declaring October as American Pharmacists Month in Hawai`i.

Adm. Willard Assumes
Command of USPACOM

Governor Lingle attended a change of command ceremony during which Adm. Robert Willard assumed command of U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM) from Adm. Timothy Keating. Adm. Willard previously served as U.S. Pacific Fleet commander.

H1N1 Vaccination Clinics
Starting in November

The State Department of Health (DOH) announced this week that participating schools have begun sending home parental consent forms for upcoming H1N1 vaccination clinics. The free, voluntary program is being offered to students in K-8th grades statewide.

 Upcoming Events

October 27, Governor Lingle will meet with Asia-Pacific and U.S. journalists who are participating in the East-West Center's Jefferson Fellowships program. The program will begin in Honolulu with one week of discussions with East-West Center experts and field visits that explore the challenge of clean energy throughout the Asia Pacific-U.S. region.
