State of Hawai`i, HSTA Reach Settlement

Governor Lingle, the Hawai`i State Teachers Association, the Department of Education and the Board of Education announced Friday they have reached a tentative two-year contract agreement for public school teachers. "We greatly value our teachers and respect the work they do every day to teach our children," said Governor Lingle. "I appreciate the patience they have demonstrated throughout this process."

In Seat Belt Use

Hawai`i's seat belt usage rate jumped to 97.9 percent during the May 2009 "Click It Or Ticket" campaign, the highest rate any state in the nation has ever achieved. The campaign runs statewide and aims to change driver behavior through education and enforcement. The goal is to get more motorists and passengers to buckle up, to better protect themselves in the event of a motor vehicle crash.

MA`O Farm Showcases Sustainability, Innovation

Governor Lingle participated in the dedication of 11 acres of land acquired by MA`O Organic Farms, which was made possible by grants from the State Legacy Land Conservation Fund, the Pierre and Pamela Omidyar Foundation of the Hawai`i Community Foundation, and assistance from the Trust for Public Land. MA`O, an acronym for "mala `ai `opio," which translates as "the youth food garden."

State Moves Forward on Energy Efficient Homes

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) recently awarded another 81 energy efficient homes in the Kanehili subdivision in Kapolei. The awards increase the homeowner total to 250 in the 403-unit project. Each home will have provisions to accommodate the future use of electric cars as well as energy-saving measures that will help new homeowners save anywhere from 30 to 50 percent of their energy bill.
