Public Safety Program
is Win-Win for State

The Department of Public Safety's Hawai`i Correctional Industries (HCI) has developed an innovative program that allows inmates to learn job skills, while giving back to the community. The program provides the Department of Education, students and schools with new playgrounds at a cost savings. HCI was established to help the department reduce recidivism through the development of inmate work programs.

Honpa Hongwanji Mission Celebrates 120 Years

Governor Lingle joined members of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawai`i at a banquet to commemorate the 750th memorial of Shinran Shonan and the 120th Anniversary of the founding of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawai`i. "The Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawai`i is an important part of our state's `ohana," said Governor Lingle, reflecting on the many ways in which members contribute to the state.

Workers' Comp. Rates Drop for Fifth Year in Row

The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs'  Insurance Division announced this week that the National Council on Compensation Insurance has filed a request for a decrease of 4.1 percent in the workers' compensation loss costs. "These lower rates show that Hawai`i's employers are effectively providing a safer workplace for our workers," said Hawai`i Insurance Commissioner J.P. Schmidt.
