Administration Addresses Deteriorating Fiscal Situation
In order to address the unprecedented budget shortfall the State is facing, the State delivered written layoff notices to the approximately 1,100 State employees who were previously notified their positions could be eliminated. "It is unfortunate we must take these difficult steps," said Governor Lingle. "Furloughs have always been my first choice to achieve significant labor cost reductions needed to address the unprecedented budget shortfall the State is facing."
Statehood Mosaic Mural Unveiled at Honolulu International Airport
As part of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Hawai`i's statehood, a giant mosaic mural featuring artwork by students nationwide was unveiled at the Honolulu International Airport this week. Made up of over 8,000 unique images, the mural was created as a lasting tribute to our state.

New Economy Lot Opens at HNL, Part of Parking Rate Increase
As the state moves forward on much-needed improvements as part of the Administration's Airports Modernization Plan, the Department of Transportation (DOT) is advising air travelers of new parking rates at Hawai`i airports throughout the state.
DLNR Begins Accessibility Improvements at MacKenzie State Park
As part of the Lingle-Aiona Administration's ongoing efforts to upgrade state parks statewide, the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) this week began construction of improvements for public accessibility at the Big Island's MacKenzie State Park.
Coast Guard Celebrates 219th Birthday
At the Coast Guard's 219th Birthday Ball, Governor Lingle paid tribute to the men and women of Coast Guard District 14 who ensure safety in our oceans and along our coastlines, protect the marine environment, enforce maritime law, manage our waterways and enhance the United States' economic and security interests at home and abroad.

Preserving Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument
Governor Lingle welcomed officials from the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to Hawai`i as part of the process to evaluate the nomination of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument as a World Heritage site.
Governor, State Civil Defense Urge Preparedness
As Hurricane Felicia weakens in the Pacific, Governor Lingle and members of her Cabinet have been receiving regular updates from State Civil Defense and the National Weather Service's Central Pacific Hurricane Center. The Governor reminds residents to "remain vigilant and to monitor the path of these storm systems, while taking steps to prepare."

State Urges Preparedness
Lt. Governor James R. "Duke" Aiona, Jr.; State Adjutant General, Major General Robert Lee; Marsha Wienert, state tourism liaison; and Ed Texeira, vice director, State Civil Defense, held a news conference to update Hawai`i residents on the steps the state has taken to prepare in advance of Tropical Storm Felicia.
New State Law Encourages Health Care Providers to Test for HIV
A new law signed by Governor Lingle will help facilitate HIV testing by Hawai`i's health care providers. Act 116 (09) amends Hawai`i Revised Statute (HRS) 325-16 which was originally written in the early years of the AIDS epidemic and required health care providers to obtain written informed consent and offer pretest HIV counseling before doing an HIV test.

Hawai`i Air National Guard Luau to Commemorate Statehood, Share Aloha in Iraq
On August 21, in commemoration of Hawai`i's 50th year of statehood, nearly four dozen members of the Hawai`i Air National Guard will bring hula and the aloha spirit to the desert of Iraq as part of the "506 ECS Hoolaulea 2009."
State of Hawai`i Data Book 2008 Now Available Online
The Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) recently released the 2008 edition of the State of Hawai`i Data Book, which covers a broad range of statistical information in areas such as population, education, labor, energy, government, tourism and transportation.
Statewide Workshops Planned to Discuss Day-Use Mooring Buoys
As part of the Lingle-Aiona Administration's commitment to protecting Hawai`i's natural resources, the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) and Malama Kai Foundation are conducting statewide workshops in August and September to help develop the state's first 10-year Day-Use Mooring Buoy Plan for the main Hawaiian Islands.
Statehood Commemoration Events to Reflect on Past, Look to Future
As Hawai`i prepares to mark its 50th year as a state, the Hawai`i 50th Anniversary of Statehood Commission is sponsoring events across the state. These events are giving communities on the Big Island, Kaua`i, Maui, Lana`i and O`ahu the opportunity to commemorate this important moment in Hawai`i's history and build on a vision for the next 50 years.

"Plan B" to Improve State Recreational Infrastructure
This week, the Board of Land and Natural Resources unanimously approved the Dept. of Land and Natural Resources' "Back to Basics" plan, or "Plan B." The plan paves the way for the state to move forward on much-needed repair and maintenance to Hawai`i's recreational infrastructure.

Governor, Hawai`i Residents Welcome Home Soldiers
This week, Governor Lingle, commander-in-chief of the Hawai`i National Guard, joined hundreds of Hawai`i residents at a ceremony to welcome home soldiers from the Hawai`i Army National Guard's 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT). The soldiers were deployed to Kuwait and Iraq for approximately eight months.

Nakamura Confirmed Unanimously by Senate
This week, Craig H. Nakamura was confirmed unanimously by the Senate to serve as the chief judge of the Hawai`i Intermediate Court of Appeals. Nakamura, who has served as an associate judge on the Intermediate Court of Appeals since April 2004, was nominated by Governor Lingle in July.
DOT and TSA open new Kona Airport Security Lane to Improve Peak Hour Service
This week, the state Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced the implementation of a new passenger security screening lane which will begin operating in September 2009 at Kona International Airport's North Terminal.

Hawai`i At 50: Learning from our Past, Looking to the Future
"The state's New Horizons For the Next 50 Years conference at the Hawai`i Convention Center succeeded...in capturing the range of complex and conflicted ideas about where Hawai`i has been and where it is headed," the Honolulu Advertiser reported in its coverage of the 50th Anniversary of Statehood Commission's Statehood Conference held on Admission Day.

Governor Updates Senate Committee on Progress in Utilizing Federal Funds
Governor Lingle testified before the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee during a special meeting in Honolulu and discussed the State's progress in utilizing federal stimulus dollars provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to stimulate Hawai`i's economy and create jobs.

45 Conservation Jobs Supported by Federal Stimulus Funds
The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) was awarded federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds from the Corporation for National and Community Service to support a one-year State of Hawai`i Recovery Youth Conservation Corps Program. The $910,974 award will support 45 conservation-focused AmeriCorps positions throughout the state.
DHHL, Hawaiian Electric Companies Announce Clean Energy Partnership
The Hawai`i Clean Energy Initiative (HCEI) continues to move forward. This week, the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL), Hawaiian Electric Company, Maui Electric Company and Hawai`i Electric Light Company (Hawaiian Electric Companies) signed an agreement that will benefit native Hawaiian homesteaders and support HCEI through the development of affordable, energy self-sufficient and sustainable communities.

Asia-Pacific Clean Energy Summit and Expo Kicks Off Monday
Starting Monday and continuing through Sept. 3, the State of Hawai`i, in cooperation with the Defense Energy Support Center and the U.S. Pacific Command, will host the Asia-Pacific Clean Energy Summit and Expo. Governor Lingle will deliver remarks during the summit, which will focus on various renewable energy initiatives and policies.
Hawai`i Firefighters Association Gives Back to Community
Governor Lingle recognized the Hawai`i Firefighters Association for its members' support of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Hawai`i. The Association's signature fund-raising activity, the Fill the Boot Drive, will take place at various locations around the state Sept. 4-7 in conjunction with the annual MDA telethon.

Governor, Hawai`i Residents Welcome Home Soldiers
Soldiers from the Hawai`i Army National Guard's 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT) returned home last week following an eight-month deployment to Kuwait and Iraq.
Federal Grant to Help Homeless and Homeless at Risk
The Hawai`i Public Housing Authority (HPHA) is receiving a $2,166,888 federal grant to distribute among nine agencies that will provide services under the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program.
State Pursues Additional Spending Reductions
Following the Council on Revenues' reduced revenue projection this week, Governor Lingle announced that she will hold an emergency meeting with her cabinet directors over the weekend to identify additional spending reductions needed to close the growing budget shortfall. The reductions will likely include additional layoffs in order to realize labor savings.
