Leading by Example: Governor Orders Two Furlough Days Per Month for Herself, Cabinet

Governor Lingle issued an executive order to furlough herself, the Lt. Governor, her chief of staff, and all executive branch directors and the deputies or assistants to the directors. It is expected that the furloughs, along with a legislatively mandated pay cut, will result in more than $1.2 million in salary savings over the next two years.

Hawai`i Welcomes Namesake Submarine

During a historic ceremony at Pearl Harbor, Governor Lingle, on behalf of the people of Hawai`i, celebrated the arrival of the state's namesake submarine, the USS Hawai`i (SSN 776). As the ship's sponsor, Governor Lingle has been present for all the major milestones throughout the life of the ship, including the keel-laying, christening, commissioning, and now arrival ceremonies.

Tea Ceremony Commemorates 50 Years of Statehood

In commemoration of Hawai`i's 50th anniversary of statehood, a tea ceremony for world peace was held at the Hawai`i State Capitol. The ceremony was conducted by Great Grand Tea Master Genshitsu Sen and organized by the Urasenke Foundation of Hawai`i, a school devoted to the Japanese tea ceremony.
