Governor Lingle Receives Spirit of the Warrior, Distinguished Civilian Awards

Governor Lingle presents a proclamation declaring 2009 as the "Year of the Noncommissioned Officer" to CSM Zettlemoyer and LTG Mixon.

In accepting the awards, Governor Lingle noted that events such as the Army Ball, where soldiers and community leaders are dressed nicely and enjoying themselves, can sometimes create a misleading idea of what it means to serve our country.

"It is important to remember that defending your country is often monotonous, dirty, difficult, sometimes frightening and tragically, even deadly at times. It heightens to me the obligation the civilian community has to all of you," the Governor said.

Governor Lingle also thanked the State Adjutant General, Major General Robert Lee for teaching her not only what it means to be a commander-in-chief, but what it means to be responsible for soldiers, and especially their families, when deployed.

The Distinguished Civilian Service Award recognizes those who make a substantial contribution to the accomplishment of the Army's missions. In submitting Governor Lingle's award to the Secretary of the Army, Lieutenant General Mixon, commander, U.S. Army Pacific, noted that Governor Lingle has been the "most engaged Hawai`i governor in military affairs since statehood."

Governor Lingle and LTG Mixon thank spouses of deployed Army soldiers for their service to the state and nation during the Army Birthday Ball.

He also said that Governor Lingle has "shown tremendous leadership in ensuring legislation benefiting Hawai`i's soldiers and their families has been passed and signed into law."  Most importantly, LTG Mixon noted, "Governor Lingle has a heart for soldiers and their families."

Established in June 2007, the Mana O Ke Koa "Spirit of the Warrior" award honors those who have demonstrated support of soldiers, their families and the Army community.  Past recipients include Bill Paty and Pasha Baker.
