Honolulu Niigata Kenjin Kai Celebrates Centennial
Emphasizing the importance of perpetuating traditions and sharing Japanese culture, Governor Lingle celebrated the centennial anniversary of the Honolulu Niigata Kenjin Kai. The club provides a social venue for people who trace their roots to Niigata Prefecture, Japan.
The Governor thanked members of the Honolulu Niigata Kenjin Kai for their efforts to recruit younger members so that they can learn about and understand the culture of their forefathers. She expressed gratitude that Governor Hirohiko Izumida traveled from Niigata to celebrate the occasion.
"Today, each of you and as a group, are the link to original Niigata immigrants to Hawai`i," Governor Lingle said. "Thank you for helping to keep their experiences alive."
Governor Lingle noted that it is impossible to imagine the past 50 years of statehood without the contributions of Japanese-Americans, who have had a remarkable influence on Hawai`i across all sectors, including military, business, education and government.
Hawai`i's special relationship with Niigata Prefecture includes joint seminars on deep sea water applications in Niigata City and Sado Island in 2002; a Niigata Prefecture-led business mission to Hawai`i in 2003; an exchange program between Sado City school and Punahou School; and the generous support of Niigata Prefecture that will allow the Niigata Kenjin Kai to attend the Niigata National Sports Festival later this year.
