Mahalo for Your Sacrifice

Governor Lingle joined the people of Hawai`i this week in mourning the loss of Air Force 1st Lt. Roslyn Schulte, who died May 20 of wounds sustained by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.

Lt. Schulte, an intelligence officer based at Hickam Air Force Base, volunteered to deploy to Afghanistan in February to help Afghan military leaders learn to gather and interpret intelligence.

She was the first female U.S. Air Force Academy Graduate to die in military action in the Middle East.

"She was great at what she did. She was so confident. She had no fear," Air Force 1st Lt. Erin Caylor said in an interview with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. "She didn't take a second of her life for granted."

"Losing Lt. Schulte has been a tragedy felt by everyone here and across the Air Force. The airmen of the 613th Air and Space Operations Center will forever be proud of her," said Col. Terrence O'Shaughnessy, 613th commander.
