Grand Opening for Affordable Rentals for Veterans
A dedication ceremony was held this week for 80 newly renovated apartments specifically for U.S. military veterans. Hale Uhiwai Nalu at Kalaeloa is the result of a public-private collaboration between the State of Hawai`i's Hawai`i Housing Finance and Development Corporation (HHFDC), the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, First Hawaiian Bank and Cloudbreak Hawai`i, LLC.

Hawai`i Workers' Compensation Insurance Rates Drop for Fifth Year in a Row
The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs' (DCCA) Insurance Division announced this week that the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) has filed a request for a decrease of 4.1 percent in the workers' compensation loss costs.

State Continues to Move Forward on Energy Efficient Homes
The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) recently awarded another 81 energy efficient homes in the Kanehili subdivision in Kapolei. The awards increase the homeowner total to 250 in the 403-unit project. The five house plans in the development feature energy efficiency as a central theme.
Hawai`i Leads Nation In Seat Belt Use During May 2009 "Click it or Ticket" Campaign
Hawai`i's seat belt usage rate jumped to 97.9 percent during the May 2009 "Click It Or Ticket" campaign, the highest rate any state in the nation has ever achieved. Last year, the seat belt usage rate in Hawai`i was 97.0 percent. Maui County motorists led the state, with 98.4 percent seat belt use, followed by Kaua`i (98.3 percent), Hawai`i (98.1 percent) and Honolulu (97.7 percent) counties.
Congratulations, Chief Judge Nakamura!
This week, Craig H. Nakamura was sworn-in by Chief Justice Ronald Moon to serve as the chief judge of the Hawai`i Intermediate Court of Appeals. Nakamura, who has served as an associate judge on the Intermediate Court of Appeals since April 2004, was nominated by Governor Lingle in July.
Ulu Ke Kukui Transitional Shelter Dedicates New Playground
Governor Lingle joined residents of Ulu Ke Kukui homeless transitional shelter and members of the community at a ceremony to dedicate a new playground at the facility in Ma`ili.
MA`O Farm Showcases Sustainability, Innovation
Governor Lingle participated in the dedication of 11 acres of land acquired by MA`O Organic Farms, which was made possible by grants from the State Legacy Land Conservation Fund, the Pierre and Pamela Omidyar Foundation of the Hawai`i Community Foundation, and assistance from the Trust for Public Land.

DCCA Makes Business Registration Documents Available Online
As part of the Lingle-Aiona Administration's efforts to provide individuals businesses with innovative and efficient online government services, the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs' (DCCA) Business Registration Division (BREG) has made more than 700,000 business registration documents available for immediate online purchase from the DCCA's Business Registration webpage.
State of Hawai`i, HSTA Reach Settlement
Governor Lingle, the Hawai`i State Teachers Association (HSTA), the Department of Education and the Board of Education announced Friday they have reached a tentative two-year contract agreement for public school teachers.

State Completes H-1 Pearl City Viaduct Repair Project
The state Department of Transportation (DOT) has completed the advanced deck replacement project on the H-1 Freeway Pearl City Viaduct. Since the project began in April, nearly 30,000 square feet of deck on the Pearl City Viaduct has been completely replaced.

St. Regis Princeville Provides Jobs, Economic Boost for Kaua`i
Governor Lingle joined Kaua`i residents and community leaders at a ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of the new St. Regis Princeville Resort on the north shore of Kaua`i. The resort provides jobs for 290 residents; 96 percent of whom are returning employees who worked at the former Princeville Resort.

Hawai`i National Guard Assisting With Relief Efforts in American Samoa
Following an earthquake and tsunami that devastated American Samoa and Samoa on Tuesday, the Hawai`i National Guard took immediate action to assist in the emergency relief effort. A total of four C-17 aircraft left Hawai`i Wednesday and Thursday for American Samoa. They were flown by aircrews from the 154th Wing of the Hawai`i Air National Guard and 15th Airlift Wing, an active duty unit based at Hickam Air Force Base.
