"Protecting our kupuna is a major priority for my Administration.
Recently, I signed three new laws that provide additional safeguards to help keep our kupuna from becoming victims of scam artists and other unscrupulous individuals.
One new law requires financial institutions in Hawai`i to report any suspected financial abuse committed against a senior citizen to the state Department of Human Services or law enforcement agency.
The two other new laws stiffen penalties for securities fraud and violations by mortgage brokers committed against kupuna.
Defrauding seniors is particularly deplorable since they are more vulnerable than others, as many are retired and living off their savings.
As Hawai`i observes Older Americans Month, we remain
committed to protecting our kupuna."
