"Since I introduced the idea that the state acquire the 850-acre Turtle Bay property, including five miles of pristine coastline on O`ahu's North Shore, widespread community support continues to grow.
At a recent talk story session, over 600 North Shore residents articulated their ideas for preserving this important area and the long-term economic viability of the existing resort.
I heard passionate support from residents about our goal of protecting the land, including a 15-year-old student from Kahuku who said 'this is a now-or-never opportunity.'
The State Legislature is working cooperatively by quickly passing legislation related to the acquisition.
We're also working with our federal partners, including Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne.
I'll be convening a Turtle Bay Advisory Working Group and this organization of community leaders will work to ensure the preservation of Hawai`i's land and our lifestyle."
