"The destruction caused by the recent hurricane in Myanmar serves as an important reminder of the real threat that hurricanes pose to our islands.
At the start of this hurricane season, which runs from June through November, we are reminded of the need to prepare a family disaster plan. It is important to discuss your plan in detail with all members of your family.
Preparing a disaster supply kit with enough food and water for three to seven days is essential. Your kit should also include medicine, toiletries, clothes, blankets and pet supplies in case you have to evacuate your home.
You will be hearing more in the coming weeks about how you can prepare your family for the unexpected, as well as provide help to those less fortunate.
By being prepared and taking personal responsibility for your loved ones, you will ensure your family is safe from these damaging storms."
