October 30, 2008 - Governor's Weekly Radio Address - Transforming Hawai`i's Economy Toward Energy Independence

My Administration is continuing to make critical steps forward on our path towards energy independence.

Hawai`i's over dependence on imported oil affects our state's economic sustainability.  The fluctuating price of foreign oil makes our state very vulnerable.  By controlling our energy future, we have the power to better control our economic future.

Currently, Hawai`i spends over five billion dollars a year to import oil. Through the development of clean energy sources, we are keeping the money in our state, supporting local companies and creating new jobs.

The recent drop in oil prices doesn't lessen the urgency of our need for energy independence. By working together with our utilities, federal and county governments, renewable energy leaders, the consumer advocate and you – the consumer – we will achieve a secure, clean energy future as well as a bright economic future for Hawai`i.
