GOVERNOR LINGLE APPOINTS SHELTON JIM ON TO BOARD OF EDUCATION

For Immediate Release: July 25, 2003

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has appointed Shelton G. W. Jim On to the Board of Education to replace Lex Brodie, who resigned from the board in June for health reasons.  Jim On’s appointment takes effect immediately, and he will serve out the remainder of Brodie’s term, which ends in November 2004.

“Shelton has a tremendous professional background, a demonstrated commitment to public service, and an outstanding work ethic,” said Governor Lingle.  “I am confident he will be an effective board member who will help bring educators, parents and the community together to address the critical needs of our public schools that will lead to long-term improvements.”

“As a product of Hawai`i’s public school system and a son of two former public school teachers on Maui and O`ahu, I fully understand the importance of ensuring all of our students have the best learning environment,” said Jim On.  “I’m honored to have the opportunity to serve in such a critical position.  I look forward to working closely with the full board and the community to find constructive solutions to the many challenges facing our education system, as well as to build upon the strengths of our public schools.”

Jim On is a private practice attorney who for the past 20 years has specialized in insurance defense litigation and professional malpractice.  From 1979 to 1983, he served as deputy attorney general in the Antitrust and Civil Litigation Divisions.  He also spent two years as a trial lawyer with the Office of the Public Defender and a year as a staff attorney with the Hawai`i Crime Commission.

Jim On is licensed to practice law in all courts in the State of Hawai`i, the Federal District Court for the State of Hawai`i, the United States Tax Court, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court.  He passed the certified public accountant’s exam.

An active participant in the community, Jim On served on the Makiki Neighborhood Board, was a commissioner on the 2001 Reapportionment Committee, and was a member of the East Manoa Lions Club.  He has also served as an officer with the Hawai`i Republican Party.

Jim On was born in Paia, Maui, and moved to Wahiawa, O`ahu, with his family when he was 11. He is a graduate of Leilehua High School, University of Hawai`i, and University of San Francisco School of Law.
