GOVERNOR LINGLE APPOINTED TO AMERICAN LEGACY FOUNDATION® BOARD OF DIRECTORS

For Immediate Release: August 14, 2003

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Linda Lingle, Governor of Hawai`i, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the American Legacy Foundation®, the national, independent public health foundation dedicated to building a world where young people reject tobacco and anyone can quit.  Governor Lingle, a Republican, was appointed by the National Governors Association (NGA), which selects two of its members to serve on the 11-member American Legacy Foundation Board.

“We are delighted to welcome Governor Lingle to the foundation's Board of Directors,” said Dr. Steve Schroeder, the foundation's Board Chair and Distinguished Professor of Health and Health Care and the Director of the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center at the University of California, San Francisco, Department of Medicine.  “She has fought to deliver information and create change through grassroots initiatives throughout the state. The American Legacy Foundation also works to educate priority population groups who are disproportionately targeted by the tobacco industry, including Asian Pacific Islanders. We feel the Governor will be a strong voice on their behalf in working with us to reduce the deadly toll of tobacco use in their communities,” he said.

“Governor Lingle has worked throughout her career to increase awareness and give a voice to her community,” said Dr. Cheryl Healton, American Legacy Foundation president and CEO.  “I welcome her to the Board and look forward to the insight and expertise that she will bring to tobacco control efforts.”

“I admire the tremendous contribution the American Legacy Foundation has made toward educating the public on the dangers of tobacco use,” said Governor Lingle.  “It is an honor to serve on the board and I look forward to working with the foundation to advance the mission of reducing tobacco use on a national level, as well as instituting their programs in Hawai`i.”

The American Legacy Foundation is located in Washington, D.C. and develops programs that address the health effects of tobacco use through grants, technical assistance and training, youth activism, strategic partnerships, counter-marketing and grass roots marketing campaigns, public relations, and outreach to populations disproportionately affected by the toll of tobacco. The foundation’s national programs include Circle of Friends, Great Start, a Priority Populations Initiative, Streetheory.org and truth®.  The American Legacy Foundation was created as a result of the November 1998 Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) reached between attorneys general from 46 states and the tobacco industry.  Visit www.americanlegacy.org.
