STATE TO REMEMBER 2nd ANNIVERSARY OF SEPT. 11TH
For Immediate Release: September 9, 2003
HONOLULU – On Thursday, September 11th at 8:46 a.m., Governor Linda Lingle will address the state via a radio and television public service announcement in remembrance of the second anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the nation (the first plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46 a.m. EST). The 30-second message will air on all four television network stations, Oceanic Cable stations, ‘Olelo, KIKU, and KBFD, as well as radio stations statewide (see attached list). The Governor’s message will include a moment of silence.
The Governor, acting upon a proclamation issued by President George W. Bush, is calling on Hawai`i residents and visitors to join with fellow citizens across the nation to observe this day with appropriate memorial ceremonies, vigils and prayer. On this day, all flags at state buildings will be flown at half-staff from sun-up to sundown in honor of the innocent victims who lost their lives during the tragic events on September 11, 2001.
Pat Hamamoto, superintendent, Department of Education, and Robert Witt, executive director of the Hawai`i Association of Independent Schools, will encourage students and teachers to tune in to the Governor’s message and to observe a moment of reflection or other remembrances at their schools.
Also on Thursday, Governor Lingle will join Admiral Thomas Fargo and other military leaders in a moment of silence at the Joint Education Venture Forum at Hickam Air Force Base at 9:00 a.m. At noon, the Governor will lead 51 Mrs. America contestants in a moment of silence and remembrance at Washington Place.
