GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $3,635,000 FOR WIDENING OF MOKULELE HIGHWAY
For Immediate Release: January 29, 2004
HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle announced today at the Maui Chamber of Commerce Governor’s Luncheon that she has released $3,635,000 to widen Mokulele Highway on Maui between the vicinity of Kolaloa Bridge to Kealia Pond Driveway.
The project is part of an overall plan to widen Mokulele Highway from two lanes to a four-lane divided arterial. The widening will accommodate the growing traffic demands between Maui’s primary urban center of Wailuku-Kahului and the rapidly expanding regions of Kihei, Wailea and Makena.
“Our administration is focused on improving and maintaining our critical infrastructure, including our roads, highways, airports, parks and harbors,” said Governor Lingle. “In meeting with the people of Maui over the past year, traffic relief was among the top issues in all of the communities we visited.”
The widening project was identified as a priority in the Maui Long-Range Land Transportation Plan in 1997. The County of Maui General Plan and Kihei-Makena Community Plan also identify this project as a priority to address the existing roadway deficiencies and to adequately anticipated growth in South Maui.
