GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $4.86 MILLION FOR NEW CLASSROOM BUILDING AT WAI`ANAE HIGH SCHOOL

For Immediate Release: January 27, 2004

HONOLULU – For the second time in less than a week, Governor Linda Lingle has released funds for the construction of a new school building.  The Governor has released $4,860,000 to design and construct an eight-classroom building at Wai`anae High School.  This follows her announcement last weekend of the release of $4,765,000 to design and construct an eight-classroom building at Waipahu High School.

The new building on the Wai`anae High School campus will feature a food service lab classroom, a biology/marine science classroom, a chemistry science classroom and five general classrooms.  The project will also include a special education room, a faculty center, a student services center, an office for a student services coordinator/educational assistant, student restrooms and a mechanical/electrical/communications room.

“Money invested in our schools is money well spent,” Governor Lingle said.  “The student population is growing at Wai`anae, and these new classrooms will provide a much-needed boost for the school’s ability to provide quality education.”

Enrollment at Wai`anae High School is expected to increase from its current level of nearly 1,900 students to about 2,200 students when the building is completed in July 2006.  The design phase of the project is scheduled to conclude in October 2004, with construction starting in March 2005.
