GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $200,000 FOR HALEIWA BOAT HARBOR IMPROVEMENTS

For Immediate Release: March 15, 2005

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $200,000 for the planning and design of improvements to the Haleiwa Boat Harbor.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will use the funds to design and replace or improve the boat harbor’s deteriorated concrete piers, slips, docks and utilities.

“Harbors provide a vital link to one of our state’s greatest resources – the ocean,” said Governor Lingle.  “Unfortunately, too many of our state’s recreational boat harbors have been neglected over the years.  These funds are just part of the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ aggressive efforts to repair small boat harbor facilities statewide to ensure they are adequate and safe for our residents and visitors who use them for fishing and other ocean activities.”

“Our existing facilities at Haleiwa Small Boat Harbor were built in the early 1970s,” said DLNR Director Peter Young.  “They have reached or exceeded their useable life, making them unfit and unsafe.  It is time to improve and replace these aged facilities. At the same time, it is also necessary to bring the harbor into compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.”

The total project cost is estimated at $1,165,000, of which $465,000 has already been appropriated.  DLNR has included a request for an additional $700,000 in the Executive Budget submitted to the Legislature to complete the Haleiwa Boat Harbor improvements. The project is expected to be completed in early 2007.

The Lingle-Aiona Administration has proposed an additional $20 million in reimbursable general obligation bond funds in its biennium budget (fiscal years 2006 and 2007) for DLNR to carry out needed harbor facility improvements statewide.
