GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $100,000 FOR COMMUTER FERRY SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS AT KAUNAKAKAI HARBOR, MOLOKA`I
For Immediate Release: March 15, 2005
HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $100,000 to finance design costs for commuter ferry system improvements at Kaunakakai Harbor on Moloka`i.
This project, a collaborative effort between the Department of Transportation and the Department of Land and Natural Resources, will provide a new terminal facility at Kaunakakai Harbor for the Moloka`i-to-Maui commuter ferry. It will include a comfort station, administrative office, parking, security fencing and barriers, and utility infrastructure.
“This project is part of the state’s overall plan to upgrade our harbor facilities,” said Transportation Director Rod Haraga. “The Moloka`i-Maui ferry system is an important link for residents who commute to work and visit family between the two islands, as well as for visitors who want to explore these islands.”
“The improved harbor terminal facilities will also benefit the adjacent users at DLNR’s small boat harbor at Kaunakakai,” said Department of Land and Natural Resources Director Peter Young.
The total estimated design and construction cost is $3,477,000, of which 80 percent ($2,800,000) will be covered by federal funds. The state’s portion will come out of the harbors special fund.
The design stage will be completed by the end of this year, with construction scheduled for completion in the fall of 2006.
