HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $100,700 for various improvements to the Kaumuali`i Highway in the Hanapepe area on Kaua`i.  The improvements include installing metal guardrails and posts, constructing concrete end posts, repairing cracks on the Hanapepe and Mana Bridges, and installing new signage.

The state Department of Transportation (DOT) will install a guardrail along the slope on the northwestern corner of Hanapepe Bridge, where none currently exists.  In addition, corrections will be made to the southwest corner guardrail connections.

The DOT will also make various improvements to the four Mana Bridges (Nos. 1-4), including repairing damage that ranges from hairline cracks to exposed rebar.

“Ongoing improvement projects like these planned for Kaumuali`i Highway are vital to the safety and integrity of our highways and bridges,” said Governor Lingle.

The total estimated project cost is $503,500, with $402,800 covered by federal funds.  The project is scheduled to begin in August and should be completed by the end of this year.
