HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $577,000 for the design of a new eight-classroom building at Mauka Lani Elementary School in Makakilo.

The new classroom building will replace some of the portable classrooms at the school and provide needed general classrooms, a computer resource service center, and a special education self-contained classroom.

Currently, Mauka Lani Elementary School operates with 16 permanent and 13 portable classrooms.  The school’s present enrollment of 586 students is expected to increase due to new housing development projects in the Makakilo area.

“It is critical that we expand the existing school facilities to accommodate the growing community in Makakilo and provide children with a school environment that is conducive to learning,” said Governor Lingle.

The total project cost is $5,100,000 and is expected to be completed by late 2007.
