GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $193,000 FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO KAIMUKI AND LILIHA LIBRARIES ON O`AHU, KAHULUI LIBRARY ON MAUI
For Immediate Release: August 2, 2005
HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $193,000 to improve Kaimuki and Liliha Public Libraries on O`ahu and Kahului Public Library on Maui.
The Kaimuki Library project ($109,000) involves construction of American with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements, including accessible routes for the disabled, parking lot signage and plumbing fixture relocation. In addition, the project will address health and safety related improvements to the air conditioning control system and lighting controls for the building. The total project cost is $148,000, and is expected to be completed by July 2006.
The Liliha Library project ($41,000) involves replacing the 15-year-old air conditioning chiller plant. The current system is not energy efficient and is in need of constant repairs. The new system will reduce energy and maintenance costs while ensuring the patrons and staff enjoy a cool environment that is conducive to learning. The total project cost is $254,000 and is expected to be completed by December 2006.
The Kahului Library project ($43,000) will involve replacing the entire roof and other related improvements. Although the existing 25-year-old wood shake roof at Kahului Library has undergone extensive patching, water continues to leak in several places, damaging the building’s interior and contents, and creating an unhealthy and unsafe situation for patrons. The recent fire at Kahului Shopping Center, which singed the roof, has also contributed to the roof’s deteriorating condition. The total project cost is $288,000.
“Our Administration is committed to maintaining and upgrading the State’s public facilities, especially our libraries, which provide the public a gathering place for ongoing learning opportunities,” said Governor Lingle. “The improvements at Kaimuki, Liliha and Kahului Public Libraries will provide a safer and more comfortable environment for all patrons and staff who use our libraries.”
