GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $500,000 TO EXPAND THE LEEWARD YMCA

For Immediate Release:  January 4, 2006

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle recently released $500,000 to YMCA of Honolulu for Phase II of the Leeward YMCA facility expansion project at the Waipahu Sugar Mill site.

In 2001, the YMCA began a major project to improve and expand the Leeward YMCA facility.  Phase I included infrastructure improvements, renovating the existing plantation-era offices and the historic sugar mill smokestack.

Phase II will include the conversion of the mill’s old generator building into a fitness center, construction of a new wing for administrative offices and locker room facilities, as well as a six-lane swimming pool.

The expansion will turn the Leeward YMCA into a “full service” branch and allow them to also serve at-risk youth, by offering after-school mentoring and tutoring programs, providing substance abuse counseling and supporting youth empowerment and leadership opportunities.

“This expanded Leeward YMCA will improve the lives of children and families living in the greater Waipahu area by creating a community-friendly gathering place,” said Governor Lingle.  “The quality recreational activities and valuable youth programs will address the tremendous needs on the Leeward side of O`ahu.”

Construction is currently ongoing, and is expected to be completed in January 2007.
