GOVERNOR’S WEST HAWAI`I COUNCIL OF ADVISORS TO MEET ON JAN. 11 AT WAIKOLOA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CAFETERIA

For Immediate Release: January 5, 2006

KONA – The Governor’s West Hawai`i Council of Advisors will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, January 11 at 5:30 p.m. at Waikoloa Elementary School, Cafeteria Bldg., 68-1730 Hooko Street.

The topic of discussion will focus on the State Department of Education’s Act 51 and implementation of the Weighted Student Formula.  Several school administrators have been invited to attend.  As always, the Governor encourages community members to also attend and participate.

Governor Linda Lingle created councils of advisors to give the neighbor islands a stronger voice in state government.  They are tasked with providing the Governor with a list of short- and long-term issues and goals that should be addressed by state government.  The Council is also responsible for identifying spending priorities and potential new sources of revenue for the state, as well as recommending potential nominees from the neighbor islands to serve on state boards and commissions.

Members of the Governor’s West Hawai`i Council of Advisors are Chair J. William Sanborn, Beverly Byouk, Douglas Carr, Leina’ala Kihoi, Joanne Ralston, John Ray, Philip Reilly, Shirley Spencer, and Rick Vidgen.  Andy Smith, East Hawai`i Governor’s Liaison, will be in attendance.

Anyone requiring special assistance or accommodations to participate at this meeting may call 327-4953.  For additional information in neighbor island council of advisors, including minutes and agendas, visit the Governor’s website at www.hawaii.gov/gov.
