GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $710,000 FOR KIHEI-UPCOUNTRY HIGHWAY PROJECT ON MAUI

For Immediate Release:  January 17, 2006

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $710,000 for the design of a new two-lane highway connecting Kihei-Makena area with Upcountry Maui.  This project is part of the Lingle-Aiona Administration’s commitment to “Keep Maui On the Move.”

The project will construct a new two-lane highway, approximately 10 miles in length, from the vicinity of the Haleakala Highway/Hali`imaile Road intersection to Pi`ilani Highway/Kaonoulu Street intersection.

When completed, this highway will reduce travel time and costs by providing a direct route between the Kihei-Makena area and Upcountry Maui. Currently, the movement of goods and people between these two areas travels through Kahului via Mokulele Highway, Hana Highway and Haleakala Highway.

“This is a significant project that is sure to have a positive impact for the residents and visitors on Maui,” said Governor Lingle.

The total project cost is $95,550,000, with funding to come from federal and state monies.  Construction is expected to be completed by end of 2012.
