GOVERNOR LINGLE & LT. GOVERNOR AIONA WILL NOT APPEAR IN PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS (PSA) IN 2006

For Immediate Release: February 1, 2006

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle and Lt. Governor James R. “Duke” Aiona, Jr. announced today that they will not participate in any Public Service Announcements (PSA) in 2006 for any state departments (i.e. Department of Human Services, Department of Health, etc.), as well as any Boards which they represent (i.e. American Legacy Foundation, Pearl Harbor Memorial Fund, Aloha United Way, National Advisory Council of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), etc.).

“I notified my cabinet of this decision last November, and strongly believe it is the fair and right thing to do,” said Governor Lingle.  “We will not use our position or afforded opportunities for any government-sponsored or non-profit public service announcements during this year’s election cycle.”

“Although it has been done in the past, and does not violate any rules or regulations, we do not feel it would be appropriate,” added Lt. Governor Aiona.

This decision excludes national PSA commitments for the National Governors Association and National Lt. Governors Association.
