HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $90,000 to finance improvements related to the investigation and remediation of underground petroleum contamination in the Iwilei District of Honolulu Harbor (bounded by Nu`uanu Stream, Kapalama Stream, and Honolulu Harbor mauka of Dillingham Boulevard).
“These studies are part of our Administration’s ongoing clean-up efforts to strengthen environmental protections,” said Governor Lingle.
The Department of Transportation has partnered with 12 participating organizations, several of which are neighboring landowners and petroleum operating companies, past and present, to form the Iwilei District Participating Parties, LLC (IDPP). IDPP is addressing the petroleum contamination problem in the Iwilei District of Honolulu Harbor under the guidance and direction of the Department of Health.
The work is intended to determine the extent of the problem and provide remediation solutions/alternatives.
