GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $2 MILLION FOR UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI`I – MANOA PERFORMING ARTS FACILITY

For Immediate Release: February 21, 2006

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $2,000,000 for the design of the new University of Hawai`i Performing Arts Facility, which will create an addition to Kennedy Theater.  The project will consolidate the Department of Theater and Dance classes and faculty offices at the University of Hawai`i at Manoa.

Currently, the Department of Theater and Dance has classes and offices in six different locations around the Manoa campus.  The new facility will provide one central location for teaching, rehearsals, performance studios, and faculty offices.  It will house classrooms, seminar rooms, dance studios, audio-visual rooms, performance spaces, rehearsal spaces, film and video classes, storage rooms, workshops, and locker/restroom facilities.

“The new performing arts facility will bring students and faculty into closer proximity with one another, providing a more cohesive teaching, learning, and performing environment,” said Governor Lingle.  “This will enable the Department of Theater and Dance to provide educational and performance opportunities for students and expand its offerings to meet student demand.”

“We are delighted this project is moving ahead,” said Interim Manoa Chancellor Denise Konan.  “This week’s Beijing Opera performances and the annual dance concert next month are timely reminders of how vibrant our arts programs are at Manoa.  The new center will be an excellent resource for our students and the community.”

The Kennedy Theater addition will be constructed behind Kennedy Theater on the existing parking lot.  It will be on three levels, with more than 81,500 gross square feet.  A new parking structure will be constructed on six levels with 480 parking spaces.

This project is ranked as priority 16 of 26 projects on the University of Hawai`i’s Fiscal Year 2006 Implementation Plan.  The estimated construction cost is $59 million.
