LINGLE-AIONA ADMINISTRATION TO HOLD PUBLIC BRIEFING ON $2.3 BILLION AIRPORT MODERNIZATION PLAN
For Immediate Release: March 22, 2006
HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle and members of the Administration will provide the public and the Legislature with an update on the State’s Airport Modernization Plan. The briefing will be held on Friday, March 24, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. in the State Capitol Auditorium.
Working with the airport community and visitor industry partners, the Administration has developed a comprehensive plan that includes short- and long-term upgrades to every major airport in the state.
“The vision and goal is to ensure our airports are modern, efficient, passenger-friendly and secure,” said State Tourism Liaison Marsha Wienert.
The plans include upgrades to the passenger terminals, ticket counters, baggage screening operations, runways and airport aprons, parking structures, and airport infrastructure such as air conditioning, restroom facilities, elevators, escalators, electrical systems, drains and sprinkler systems. In addition, the plan incorporates improvements to comply with federal regulations on storm water systems, runway safety, perimeter security and crash fire safety.
The proposed upgrades which are expected to cost $2.3 billion will be paid for entirely by airport fees and federal funds, and will not utilize any State General Funds.
The Lingle-Aiona Administration has invited the House and Senate leadership, including the committees on transportation and finance to attend the briefing.
In addition to the Governor, participants in the briefing will include: Transportation Director Rod Haraga, Deputy Director of Transportation Airports Division Brian Sekiguchi, Tourism Liaison Marsha Wienert, Budget and Finance Director Georgina Kawamura, and John DeCoster, co-chairman of the Airline Committee of Hawai`i.
