GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $3,340,000 FOR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS STATEWIDE

For Immediate Release: July 22, 2008

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $3,340,000 to finance improvement projects at public schools statewide, including health and safety upgrades to remove cesspools, storm water discharge plans, and a pilot study to determine how to make portable classrooms more energy efficient. Last week the Governor also announced the release of $30 million for various classroom renovations statewide.

Cesspool Removal (Statewide) – $200,000: An additional $200,000 released by the Governor will be used to continue the closure and conversion of cesspools at schools statewide to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Clean Water Act. The work includes installing replacement wastewater treatment systems, as well as cleaning and or replacing wastewater lines.

Storm Water Discharge Plans (O‘ahu) – $200,000: These funds will be used to complete storm water discharge plans for 168 O‘ahu schools, including preparing permit applications to the State Department of Health for regulatory compliance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency storm water discharge guidelines. The Governor previously released $1,388,326 for this project.

Portable Classroom Energy Study (Statewide) – $110,000: Planning funds will be used to perform a pilot study to create a portable classroom prototype that generates as much energy as it consumes. This will help to reduce school energy consumption statewide in the future. The planning project is scheduled to begin in September 2008 and be completed in September 2009.

Waiākea Middle School (Big Island) – $120,000: These funds will be used to install air-conditioning in the existing school library. The upgrades will provide a more comfortable environment for library users and protect the books, computers and other library resources from humidity. Design is scheduled to begin in December 2008 and be completed in July 2009. Construction is scheduled to begin in October 2009 and be completed in March 2010.

Kalaheo Elementary School (Kaua‘i) – $150,000: These funds will finance the design of a new administration and classroom building at Kalaheo Elementary School on Kaua‘i, to replace the building that was damaged by fire in 2005. The additional funds are needed to allow for the renovation of the temporary administrative office space to use as classroom space.

August Ahrens Elementary School (O‘ahu) – $1 million: These funds will be used to install air-conditioning in three classrooms where noise from the nearby library’s air-conditioning units are interfering with classroom activities and forcing teachers to close their windows. Design is scheduled to begin in January 2009 and be completed in June 2009. Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2009 and be completed in January 2010.

Jarrett Middle School (O‘ahu) – $840,000: Renovations at the school include repair of sloping and cracked floors and foundations at Buildings A and B. Design is scheduled to begin in December 2008 and be completed in September 2009. Construction is scheduled to begin in February 2010 and be completed in October 2010.

Kalihi Uka Elementary School (O‘ahu) – $320,000: This project includes the design and construction of restroom renovations to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and to address ongoing repair issues. The total cost of the project is estimated to be $820,000, with $500,000 previously released in May 2006. Construction is scheduled to be completed in August 2009.

Mililani High School (O‘ahu) – $300,000: These funds will be used to design and construct a new drop-off area, turn around and additional guest parking for the campus’ new classroom building. The project will help alleviate congestion in the school’s main parking lot during peak morning and afternoon periods, as well as the back-up that results along Meheula Parkway, the major roadway through Mililani. These improvements will provide a safer environment for students, staff and the surrounding community. The project is expected to be completed in 2010.

Waipahu Elementary School (O‘ahu) – $100,000: This project involves the design and construction of improvements to provide wheelchair accessibility to Buildings F and I. Currently, Waipahu Elementary must rely on another school in the area complex to accommodate students who require wheelchair access. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2010.
