GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $610,000 FOR NEW LAND MAINTENANCE BASEYARD IN HALAWA

For Immediate Release:  February 6, 2008

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $610,000 for the design and construction of a permanent baseyard for the land maintenance crew from the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ (DLNR) Land Division, O‘ahu District. The baseyard will move from its current month-to-month lease in Kapolei to the Department of Agriculture Quarantine Station near the H-3 Freeway, centrally located in Hālawa.

“Our land crews play a critical role in ensuring that state-owned land is properly maintained,” said Governor Lingle. “This project will provide the maintenance crew on O‘ahu with a permanent facility at a centralized location. It will also allow them to be closer to project sites and reduce their commute times.”

Typical duties of the existing six-employee land maintenance crew include tree trimming, weed control, debris removal, stream and ditch clearing, and the demolition and removal of derelict structures on DLNR-owned property. The new facility will consist of office space, storage area for equipment, security fencing and a parking area.

Design is scheduled to be completed in June 2009 to allow time for city and utility company infrastructure planning and approvals. Construction is scheduled to be completed by June 2010.
