GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $723,882 TO REPLACE CESSPOOLS ON FORMER NANAIKAPONO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CAMPUS

For Immediate Release:  March 10, 2008

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $723,882 to replace nine stand-alone cesspools at the former Nānāikapono Elementary School campus in Nānākuli.

Located at 89-195 Farrington Highway on Hawaiian Home Lands, the campus is currently being used by several groups, including Ka Waihona O Ka Na‘auao, a Public Charter School; Kamehameha Pre-Schools; ‘Aha Pūnana Leo, a Hawaiian Immersion School; and Wai‘anae Coast Early Childhood Services’ Parent & Child Development Center.

The cesspool replacement project is being undertaken to comply with an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandate.

“Building an interconnected sewer system will address health and safety concerns on the campus and also provide needed infrastructure improvements for the future use of this land by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands,” said Governor Lingle.

The project involves connecting the existing cesspools with nearly 2,000 feet of sewer lines to create a new on-site sewer system, and linking this system to the City & County of Honolulu sewer collection main located along Farrington Highway. The project will also restore sidewalks, pavement, fencing and landscaping impacted by the construction.

Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2008 and be completed in July 2008.
