GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES FUNDS FOR SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS AT CENTRAL UNION CHURCH

For Immediate Release:  July 11, 2008

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released a $125,000 grant-in-aid to Central Union Church in Honolulu for facility improvements at the church’s preschool.  The funds will be used to purchase and install a fire alarm system, upgrade the electrical transformer and power lines and replace the plumbing.

“The upgrades and installation of safety systems are necessary to maintain the integrity of the historic church as well as provide critical safety systems for the preschool’s young children and faculty,” said Governor Lingle.

The state’s investment in the preschool upgrades is in line with the State Historic Preservation Division’s mission to preserve significant historic and cultural sites.

Central Union Church, which has served the community since 1887, is on the State Register of Historic Places and is one of the most recognized structures on O‘ahu.  The preschool located on the church grounds has an enrollment of approximately 160 children.
