GOVERNOR LINGLE ORDERS U.S. AND STATE FLAGS TO FLY AT HALF-STAFF IN HONOR OF SPECIALIST CWISLYN K. WALTER

For Immediate Release:  March 2, 2009

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has ordered the United States and Hawai‘i state flags at state, county and federal buildings throughout Hawai‘i to fly at half-staff on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, from sunrise to sunset, in honor of Specialist Cwislyn K. Walter, who died on February 19, 2009, in Kuwait while serving our nation.

“Although Specialist Walter was not born in the United States, she valued the principles of democracy and freedom, and demonstrated her commitment by bravely serving her adopted country and recently becoming a United States citizen,” said Governor Lingle.  “She is a true patriot.  I extend my deepest condolences to Specialist Walter’s family, friends and fellow soldiers.”

Walter, of Honolulu, was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 29th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Hawai‘i Army National Guard.  She was a 2007 graduate of Farrington High School.

“It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of a Hawai‘i daughter who valiantly served and protected our country,” said Lt. Governor James R. “Duke” Aiona, Jr. “Specialist Walter’s passing is a painful reminder of the sacrifices borne by the brave men and women of our armed forces. Vivian and I offer our deepest sympathies to Specialist Walter’s family and friends.”

A memorial service will be held in Honolulu on March 3.
