GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $500,000 FOR HANA HARBOR DEVELOPMENT PLAN
For Immediate Release: April 23, 2009
HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $500,000 for a development plan to improve Hana Harbor's commercial pier as part of the Lingle-Aiona Administration’s six-year Harbors Modernization Plan, a comprehensive plan developed by the Department of Transportation’s Harbors Division and the Hawai‘i Harbor Users Group (HHUG).
This project is in addition to the $1.8 billion public infrastructure construction plan unveiled by Governor Lingle in December 2008 to stimulate the economy and create jobs.
“Hana Harbor serves as a vital link for area residents,” said Governor Lingle. “This development plan is the first step in identifying Hana’s vision for its harbor and ensuring that the needs of the remote Hana community are met well into the future.”
The development plan will consider improvements to the existing pier and infrastructure to best meet community needs. It will also incorporate conceptual site planning, environmental and cultural reviews, a traffic study and the identification of necessary development permits.
The total project cost, including design and construction of improvements, is estimated to be $20 million. The development plan is scheduled to begin in June 2009 and be completed in October 2009, and will be conducted by the DOT Harbors Division in partnership with its implementing agency, the Aloha Tower Development Corporation.
