STATEMENT BY GOVERNOR LINDA LINGLE ON THE DEATH OF FORMER PHILIPPINES PRESIDENT CORAZON AQUINO

For Immediate Release:  July 31, 2009

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of former Philippine President Corazon Aquino.  I had an opportunity to spend some time with President Aquino in July 2004 when she was in Hawai‘i for an East-West Center Foundation dinner in her honor. 

“I admired President Aquino’s courage and resolve, and her ability to find strength following the assassination of her husband to help transform her country into a democracy. 

“President Aquino was a friend to Hawai‘i and it was clear from the outpouring of Aloha when she visited that Hawai‘i’s Filipino community held a strong affection for her and appreciated all that she had done for her country.”
