GOVERNOR'S EAST HAWAI`I COUNCIL OF ADVISORS TO RECEIVE BRIEFING ABOUT ENERGY AND TECHNOLOGY-BASED ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

For Immediate Release: January 16, 2007

HILO – The Governor’s East Hawai‘i Council of Advisors will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, January 25 at 5:15 p.m. in the Aupuni Center Conference Room at 101 Pauahi St.  The public is invited to attend.

Maurice Kaya, chief technology officer for the Strategic Industries Division in the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, will brief the Council on work that the Strategic Industries Division conducts as part of DBEDT.  He will cover the major activities and initiatives the Administration is focused on, specifically energy efficiency, renewable energy and technology-based economic development.

“This will be a great opportunity for East Hawai‘i residents to see what role they can play in helping the Big Island reduce our dependence on imported fuel and as well as increase economic development for our state,” said Dylan Nonaka, the Governor’s East Hawai‘i liaison.

The Governor’s neighbor island councils of advisors are tasked with providing the Governor with a list of short- and long-term issues and goals that should be addressed by state government.  The councils also identify spending priorities and potential new sources of revenue for the state, as well as recommend potential nominees from the neighbor islands to serve on state boards and commissions.

The members of the Governor’s East Hawai`i Council of Advisors are Chairman Alton Okinaka, John Kai, Andy Baclig, Carol Van Camp, Jennifer Zelko, Kainoa Kaumeheiwa-Rego, Ken Ahlo, and Walter Moe.

Anyone requiring special assistance or accommodations to participate at this meeting may call 974-6262.  For additional information on neighbor island councils of advisors, including minutes and agendas, visit the Governor’s Web site at www.hawaii.gov/gov.
