GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $505,000 FOR SHELTER AT MAUKA LANI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
For Immediate Release: February 20, 2007
HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $505,000 for renovations to the library and administration building at Mauka Lani Elementary in Kapolei to provide a safe room for students and faculty in the event of a chemical or hazardous material emergency. This space is known as a “shelter-in-place.”
Located within five miles of the Campbell Industrial Park, the renovations are required in order for the school to meet health and safety regulations. Among the improvements will be replacing seals on all doors and windows and modifying the air conditioning systems to include a closed loop system which would circulate air during an emergency.
“Of course the hope is that these precautionary measures will never have to be employed, but we want to be prepared by ensuring the safety of our students and teachers,” said Governor Lingle.
This project is priority number 11 of 101 in the Department of Education’s Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) dated September 2006.
Construction is expected to be completed by November 2008.
