GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $2,658,100 FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES STATEWIDE

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $2,658,100 for improvement
projects at correctional facilities located on Kaua‘i, Maui, O‘ahu and the
Big Island.
“The repairs for these facilities are necessary to ensure the health, safety and security of inmates and correctional facility employees. They are essential in order for each site to function safely and efficiently,” Governor Lingle said.
HAWAI‘I COMMUNITY CORRECTIONAL
CENTER
This project will allow for improvements to the air conditioning system in
the Punahele Housing facility at Hawai‘i CCC. The total cost of the
project is estimated at $244,000 and is expected to be complete by June
2008.
In addition, $200,000 has been released for the construction of the Hale Nani Vocational Training program at HCCC. The funds will be used to provide a modular office and classroom for the rehabilitation and re-entry program for inmates transitioning back into the community.
WOMEN’S COMMUNITY CORRECTIONAL
CENTER
The funds will be used to finance a sewer system assessment report to
determine the extent of replacement for exterior sewer lines. The
total cost of the project is estimated at $32,000 and the report is expected
to be finished in June of this year. Additional design and
construction funds will be requested following completion of the assessment
report.
O‘AHU COMMUNITY CORRECTIONAL CENTER
This project will replace two of the air conditioning units at
O‘ahu CCC which have surpassed their service life. The work includes
design and construction for the replacement of two 143-ton chillers,
including the chilled water pumps and piping within the chiller plant.
The total estimated cost is $939,000 and the expected completion date for
construction is September 2008.
HALAWA CORRECTIONAL FACILITY
The 20-year-old emergency generator at Halawa Correctional Facility will be
replaced. In the event of a power outage, the new generator will
ensure the safety of facility employees by continuing to power the
institution’s security systems. The total cost of the project is
estimated at $313,500 and is expected to be completed in August 2008.
MAUI COMMUNITY CORRECTIONAL CENTER
The existing 125-ton air conditioning chiller at Maui CCC will
be replaced. It is estimated to cost a total of $573,600 and
construction is expected to be completed in June 2008.
KAUA‘I COMMUNITY CORRECTIONAL
CENTER
The emergency generator at Kaua‘i CCC will be replaced. Currently, the
generator operates on an outdated propane system. The replacement will
upgrade the system to a more common diesel-fueled system. The total
cost of the project is estimated at $356,000 and expected to be complete in
August 2008.
