ROBOTICS TO BE DISCUSSED AT LANA‘I COUNCIL OF ADVISORS MEETING

For Immediate Release: April 11, 2007

HONOLULU – The Governor’s Lana‘i Council of Advisors will meet on Wednesday, April 18, 5:00 p.m. at the Lana‘i High and Elementary School, Room E-3, Fraser Avenue, Lana‘i City.  The public is invited to attend.

Art Kimura, of the Hawai‘i Space Grant Consortium, will discuss how Lana‘i students can engage in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education through involvement in robotics.  Kimura is actively involved in helping Hawai‘i schools participate in FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics competitions.  Promoting STEM skills among Hawai‘i students is a key part of the Lingle-Aiona Administration’s Hawai‘i Innovation Initiative.  Hawai‘i will host a FIRST Regional Robotics Competition, March 27-29, 2008 at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

Governor Linda Lingle created councils of advisors to give the neighbor islands a stronger voice in state government.  The Lana‘i Council of Advisors holds monthly public meetings to seek community input and advise the Governor of important issues, public priorities, and recommendations for state boards and commissions.

The members of the Governor’s Lana‘i Council of Advisors are Cindy Arruiza, John dela Cruz, Matthew Mano, Douglas Rolefson and Nani Watanabe.

Anyone requiring special assistance or accommodations to participate at this meeting may call (808) 586-0001.  For additional information on neighbor island councils of advisors, including meeting minutes and agendas, visit the Governor’s Web site at www.hawaii.gov/gov
