GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $2,590,000 FOR WINDWARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE LIBRARY AND LEARNING CENTER

For Immediate Release:  April 17, 2007

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $2,590,000 in design funds for Windward Community College’s (WCC) Library and Learning Center.  The building will be located at the heart of the campus in Kane‘ohe, anchoring one end of the central lawn.

The center will consolidate the College’s library, media, learning assistance, and computer areas into a single integrated facility. The programs are currently located in former state hospital ward buildings that are not adequate for college-level needs. The facility will serve as the focal point for research and study, and provide students, faculty and the community with access to information resources and up-to-date academic support.

“The center will provide more centralized, efficient and up-to-date services to students, faculty and staff in an environment where responsiveness to changes in information and technology is crucial,” said Governor Lingle.

“The new Library and Learning Center will become the center for learning at the college,” said WCC Chancellor Angela Meixell. “Moving four programs from three, 80-year-old, former state hospital buildings into one modern facility will allow us to integrate library, computing, media, tutoring and many related services into one 21st century knowledge center.”

The total project cost is $46,097,000. In 2001, $350,000 was released for the planning phase.  The design phase will start in May 2007 and is scheduled for completion in August 2008.
