GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $5,510,015 FOR REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE IMPROVEMENTS AT MAUI SCHOOLS

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $5,510,015 for repair and maintenance projects in various schools on Maui. The projects include electrical and telecommunications upgrades, air conditioning and other repairs.

“These repairs are vital to the safety of our students, teachers and the daily operations of our school buildings,” said Governor Lingle.  “The facilities in which we educate our students should be conducive to a productive learning environment.”

The following projects are planned for Maui schools:

▪ Lokelani Intermediate School: $3,187,000 will be use to provide additional design and construction for campus-wide air conditioning and electrical upgrades. 

▪ Lahāina Intermediate School:  $775,000 is allocated to design and construct the school’s telecommunications system and electrical power upgrades. Construction is scheduled to start in May 2007 and anticipated to be completed in December 2008.

▪ Kahului Elementary School: $600,000 will be used to design and construct improvements at various buildings to prevent flooding during heavy rains.  The project will provide drainage improvements to buildings F, G, H and I, which usually flood during heavy rain periods. The anticipated construction start date is December 2007 and is scheduled to be completed in July 2008.

 ▪ Lahainaluna High School:  $948,015 was released for various projects at the school. $33,015 in construction funds will be used to install three fire alarm pull stations to comply with the Maui County Fire Department’s regulations and six roll-up coiling doors in the school’s new athletic locker and weight room.

  $915,000 in design funds was released to plan a new cafeteria at the school. The new cafeteria will provide meal services to approximately 1,035 students daily and three meals a day, seven days a week to approximately 100 students who board at the school. Construction is scheduled to start in July 2008 with completion anticipated in October 2009.
